RELEASE

Ciro Madd’s head is inhabited by sixties’ rock icons, flashbacks of children’s choir rehearsals, noises from his shoegazer youth and traces of many bad trips. In the 90’s, Ciro left his hometown to live in São Paulo, where he set up his bedroom studio in the basement of an Italian neighborhood. Surrounded by distortion pedals, fourtrack recorders and a piano from the XIX century, he has recorded the melodies that go through his mind, sculpting them as a grayish psychedelia of rare pop sensibility. Assembling some of these tracks produced over the 00’s, Sleeping in the Rough Sea, Ciro Madd’s debut, was just released by Pug Records, issued as free MP3, CD-Rs and expanded cassette.

Opening the album, Long Time, a gloomy ballad guided by keyboards, features Ciro on his original instrument. Laying lo-fi gems, he declares his sixties obsession in the whispered See You and in The Color of Your Mind, where vocal harmonies bring a little psychedelic color into a folk tune. Moving up from eighties indie pop to next decade power pop, Candy Song and The Call reveal his wonder for british guitar bands, what is confirmed by the plasticity of Experiment, with disorienting dream pop echoes. Closing the album, She’s Waiting For The Sunlight flirts with early progressive music, but, as on all other tunes, it maintains focus on an outstanding enough melody to compose a catchy song without depending on the arrangement involving it.

While Sleeping in the Rough Sea dialogues with current american bands influenced by Creation, it is safe to say that Ciro’s conception is independent from this movement, bearing singularities. Without many reflections on post-punk, Madd travels on his own to the 60’s, rescuing as obscure names as old-fashioned dinosaurs. However, his unpretentious pop appeal transcends discussions about influences, adding a certain freshness to what could sound nostalgic. Then, after 50 minutes, the 14-track album demystifies a supposed barrier between classic and alternative rock, which still separates two equally innocent groups: those who overestimate the past and those who celebrate any novelty.

————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————

RELEASE (PORTUGUESE)

Enfileirando pérolas lo-fi, ele declara sua paixão pelos anos 60 na sussurrada See You e em The Color of Your Mind, onde harmonias vocais pincelam cores psicodélicas ao folk.
